Staphylococcal enterotoxin B primes cytokine secretion and lytic activity in response to native bacterial antigens.

Superantigens stimulate T-lymphocyte proliferation and cytokine production, but the effects of superantigen exposure on cell function within a complex, highly regulated immune response remain to be determined. In this study, we demonstrate that superantigen exposure significantly alters the murine host response to bacterial antigens in an in vitro coculture system. Two days after exposure to th...

T cell subsets in experimental lupus nephritis: modulation by bacterial superantigen.

Chronic graft-vs-host disease (GvH), induced by injection of DBA/2 lymphocytes into (C57BL/6 x DBA/2)F1 hybrids, is a murine model for lupus nephritis, associated with a Th2-dependent polyclonal B cell activation. The development of glomerulosclerosis in this model is preceded by a glomerular influx of LFA-1+ T cells. We investigated whether exposure to bacterial superantigen would modulate the...

Memory T cells are anergic to the superantigen staphylococcal enterotoxin B

We have used staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB) to study the role of naive and memory T cells in the induction of peripheral tolerance. After administration of SEB to mice, the numbers of naive and memory T cells increase, as does the proportion of memory T cells, which are unresponsive to further stimulation with SEB in vitro. In addition, memory T cells generated in response to conventional a...

DIFFERENTIAL EXPRESSION OF SURFACE MARKERS CD45RB AND CD44 ON MURINE CD8+ CELLS

Considering the emerging importance of phenotypic markers as indicators of cell function and differentiation, we studied patterns ofCD44 and CD45RB expression in CD8+ murine T cells with prior exposure to antigen or staphylococcal enterotoxin B ( SEB ). Following in vivo priming with two purified protein derivatives (one from a virulent WHO strain and the other from an avirulent strain), T ...

In vitro and in vivo evaluation of staphylococcal superantigen peptide antagonists.

Superantigen peptide antagonists failed to block T-cell activation and cytokine production as well as toxic shock induced by staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB) in HLA class II transgenic mice. They also failed to inhibit the binding of SEB to HLA class II molecules as well as activation of human T lymphocytes in vitro.
